Summary: This collection contains about 200 postcards of the late 19th and early 20th century. The collection portrays the history of Greece and the Balkans over a 35-year period, beginning with the defeat of Greece in its war with Turkey in 1897, and ends in 1922, with another defeat and the abandonment of Greece’s territorial hopes in Asia Minor. P. Betancourt is Professor of Art History and Archaeology at Temple University, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and an archaeologist specializing in Minoan Crete. In 2003, the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ organized an exhibition of the postcards, which were published in Philip P. Betancourt, Greece and Her Neighbours in Historic Postcards: 1895-1920, Athens 2003. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE - ΒΙΟΓΡΑΦΙΚΟ ΣΗΜΕΙΩΜΑ
Philip P. Betancourt (born 1936) is an American archaeologist, author, and a specialist in the Aegean Bronze Age. He was the Laura H. Carnell Professor of Art History and Archaeology at Temple University's Tyler School of Art and was an Adjunct Professor at the University of Pennsylvania in the Graduate Group in the Art and Archaeology of the Mediterranean World and the Department of the History of Art. He also served as Director of the Institute for Aegean Prehistory (INSTAP). Betancourt received his Ph.D. in Archaeology from the University of Pennsylvania. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007.
