BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Jerome W. Sperling (1908-1997) studied classics and archaeology at the University of Wisconsin (B.A. 1930, M.A. 1931) and received his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati (1937). He worked as a member of John Caskey’s excavation and publication team at Troy, where he dug and published Kum Tepe. During WW II he served in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) together with Caskey. Sperling also conducted a surface survey in Elis. In the 1980s, Sperling became interested in surveying the island of Syme (Dodecanese). Other publications include Thera and Therasia (published by the Athens Center of Ekistics in 1973).
