BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Archaeologist James Penrose Harland (1891-1973) graduated from Princeton University in 1913. He was a Fellow of the Archaeological Institute of America at the American School of Classical Studies in 1920-1921. In 1921, he dug with Carl Blegen at Zygouries. From 1926 to 1927, Harland excavated the Late Helladic levels on the island of Aigina and the Bronze Age settlement at Tsoungiza (Nemea). His work was funded by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He served for many years as professor of Classics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Harland is the author of The Peloponnesos in the Bronze Age (Cambridge Mass., 1923, a separatum from Harvard Studies in Classical Philology 34, 1923), and Prehistoric Aigina. A History of the Island in the Bronze Age (Paris 1925, his PhD dissertation, republished by L’Erma di Bretschneider in 1966), and several articles.
CONTENT
This small collection contains a letter from Stephen B. Luce to J .P. Harland (1924); a letter from K. J. Beloch to Harland; a card: "To - Boo'ful - The "Best Seller" in 1924 - "Proto-Pots" from - The Author"; and a note from Ernst Kalinka. (For letters of J. P. Harland to Carl W. Blegen, see the Carl W. Blegen Papers.) These items were found in J. P. Harland's own copy of The Peloponnesos in the Bronze Age (1924). After Harland's death in 1973, parts of his personal library were put up for sale or given to the graduate students of the Classics Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; one of the students, Robert Sutton, bought the book together with the loose items inside; he then gave it to Jack Davis in 1974 who, in turn, donated the loose items to the ASCSA Archives in 2012.
