BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

James Henry Oliver (1905-1981), professor of Classics at Johns Hopkins University from 1946 to 1970, received his B.A. and Ph.D from Yale University (1926, 1931). At Yale he studied under George L. Hendrickson and Michael I. Rostovtzeff. He attended the University of Bonn in 1927-1928 and the American Academy in Rome in 1928-1930. From 1932 until 1936 he excavated at the Athenian Agora and served as the epigraphist of the excavations.  His main interest and subject of many publications was the Roman government of the provinces.
