BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

George Leonard Huxley was an internationally known philologist. He was born on 23 September 1932.  He attended Magdalen College, Oxford, where he studied Classical Philology. From 1955 to 1961 he was a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. In 1956 he was appointed Assistant Director of the British School at Athens. He was twice visiting lecturer at Harvard University (1958-59 and 1961-1962). George L. Huxley taught for twenty years at Queen’s University in Belfast as professor of Greek (1962-1983). He has been a member of many distinguished committees and associations throughout his career: Executive Member of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (1971-1972), Irish Member of the Standing Committee for the Humanities Euro Scientists Federation (1978-1986), member (since 1979), Senior Vice President (1984-1985/1999-2000), Honorary Librarian (1990-1994), Special envoy of the Royal Irish Academy (1994-1997) and Vice president (1997-1998) of the Royal Irish Academy. Ιn 1984 Professor Huxley served as Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the VIII International Congress of Classical Studies, in Dublin. In 1984 he was also elected as Senior Vice President of the Federation Internationale des Societes of d’ Etudes Classiques. From 1986 until 1989, Huxley served as the Director of the Gennadius Library at the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ. He became honorary professor of Greek at Trinity College Dublin in 1989 and in 1999 he was appointed honorary professor of the Classical Association of Ireland. In 2003 professor Huxley was the keynote speaker of the XVI International Congress of Classical Archaeology, Boston.  Finally, Huxley co-directed with Nicolas Coldstream, the Kythera Excavation Project. A prolific writer, he published and edited the following books, in addition to hundreds of articles: Achaeans and the Hittites (1960), The Early Ionians (1966), Greek Epic Poetry from Eumelos to Panyassis (1969), Kythera: Excavations and Studies Conducted by the University of Pennsylvania Museum and the British School at Athens (1972), Pindar’s Vision of the Past (1975), On Aristotle and Greek Society (1979), Homer and the Travellers (1988). He was married to Davina Best.

It covers almost all aspects of the RIA activities from 1979-2005, including prosaic memos and announcements, participation on various committees, discussions about proposed permanent and temporary members of the RIA, announcements of seminars and colloquia, activities of the Library of RIA, and correspondence.
