BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Donald R. Laing, Jr. was born October 5, 1931 in Richeyville, Pennsylvania. He was professor of Classics at Case Western Reserve University. Laing received his A.B. at Washington and Jefferson College in 1953. He graduated with an M.A. in classics from the University of Cincinnati in 1960. He also received his Ph.D. in classics, from the University of Cincinnati, in 1965. After graduation he taught at Washington and Jefferson College (1954–59) and the University of Cincinnati (1960–61). In 1962, Laing joined Case Western Reserve University’s Department of Classics, where he taught for more than 40 years, remaining active even after his retirement in 2003. Among many titles over the decades, he was associate dean for special undergraduate studies, assistant dean for foreign study, nominating chairman of the faculty senate and, for 19 years, classics department chairman.

Laing was a member of the ASCSA’s 1957 Summer Sessions and a Research Fellow of the School (holding the AIA Olivia James Fellowship) in 1967–68. He was also director of two Summer Sessions at ASCSA, in 1976 and 1987. He was the representative of Case Western Reserve University to the ASCSA Managing Committee since 1968. He worked closely with Henry S. Robinson at the excavations on Corinth’s Temple Hill in the 1970s as a member of the Case Western Reserve University expedition team.

His research interests included Greek history, especially Athenian naval inscriptions, on which he published several articles. Laing was a long-time member of the Cleveland Archaeological Society and served as both its vice-president and president. He also left a collection of archaeological materials to Ohio State University.

He passed away on April 2, 2009.
