COLLECTION OVERVIEW

Collection Number: GR ASCSA ExcRec 009
Name of Creator(s): Hetty Goldman (1881-1972), John Caskey (1909-1981)
Title: Eutresis Excavation Records
Date(s): 1924-1927, 1958
Language(s): English
Summary: Excavations at the site of Eutresis were originally conducted by Hetty Goldman (1924-1927), and later re-examined by John L. Caskey (1958, University of Cincinnati). Although Goldman had noticed the mound of Eutresis already in 1911, she was not able to excavate the site until 1924 after her major undertakings at Halae and Colophon. Eutresis was the only of Goldman’s major excavations not to be interrupted by war. Small supplementary excavation took place in 1958 under the direction of J.L. Caskey. The Eutresis Excavation Records contain field notebooks, architectural plans, photos and glass lanterns. In 2004 and 2015 the collection was supplemented by material donated by Bryn Mawr College, Department of Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology from H. Goldman’s 1924-1927 excavations of the site, mostly photographs and glass lantern slides (Acc # 2004.08 and 2015.01).

Glass Lantern Slides of landscapes, pottery, excavation trenches, jewelry, metal finds, sculpture.
The following lantern slides were found in boxes that were labeled “Eutresis” (at Bryn Mawr College). The slides, apparently used for lectures, are generally not labeled and give little to no information. A few slides may have been placed erroneously in the Eutresis boxes, depicting other sites. The slides appear to be from the period 1925 to 1927. All lantern slides are in black and white; several are black and white photographs of watercolors by Piet de Jong.
