Description of Managing Committee Duties

The Managing Committee sets policies for the School’s academic, teaching, and research programs. In addition, it appoints academic personnel and participates in strategic planning for the School. All actions by the Managing Committee are taken by vote of the Managing Committee as a whole or by its Executive Committee or Chair. The Managing Committee meets twice each year, at annual January meetings of the Society for Classical Studies and the Archaeological Institute of America, and on a Saturday in early May via Zoom.

An individual member is eligible for election to one of the 10 Standing Committees which directly oversee various aspects of the School, from admissions to the library system. The individual member must be of voting member status. Standing Committees work throughout the year. Please see the Committee Handbook for further details. In order to be considered for an open position on a Standing Committee, please fill out the online preference survey when the Committee on Committees makes a call for volunteers in the fall of each year. When not on a standing committee, one can participate in votes, polls, and give input to the School on various matters.

Managing Committee Benefits

  • Faculty, students and former students of Cooperating Institutions pay only one-half the fees for use of the facilities of the School in Greece during the academic year. These fees are, at present, calculated at the rate of $220 per month for Regular and Student Associate Members and $330 per month for Senior Associate Members, or $110 and $165 respectively for those connected with a Cooperating Institution. There is no tuition for graduate students to attend the American School, and the School awards over $800,000 in fellowships annually. These modest fees are in lieu of any tuition charges. For more on School fees
  • Members of the faculty of Cooperating Institutions are eligible to apply for the School's special research fellowships, known as Whitehead Distinguished Scholar. Whitehead Distinguished Scholars receive a stipend, free School housing, and may participate in all aspects of the School's program.  For more information about the Whitehead Distinguished Scholar
  • The School accepts applications for the six-week ASCSA Summer Sessions and 18-day Summer Seminars from advanced undergraduate and graduate students. The School awards five scholarships for participation in the ASCSA Summer Programs. These “open” scholarships are restricted to students enrolled at Cooperating Institutions.
  • The libraries of Cooperating Institutions receive discounted rates on School publications.
  • Managing Committee Members receive a 40% discount on Hesperia subscriptions. For more see:

Become a Member of the Managing Committee or Nominate Someone to the Managing Committee

According to the Regulations (II.1), Cooperating Institutions may nominate up to three voting representatives to the ASCSA Managing Committee.* We encourage nominations from various fields of study, not limited to members of classics departments.

A nomination can be made at any time. Please submit the necessary documents before October 15 (if aiming for January meeting approval) or February 15 (if aiming for May meeting approval).

The nomination procedure is as follows:

  1. An official letter from the President, Provost, or Dean of Faculty proposing the candidate, along with the nominee’s curriculum vitae. The official letter should be addressed to the Chair of the Committee on Personnel and emailed in PDF form to the Programs Administrator at programs@ascsa.org. The letter should address why the candidate would be a good addition to the Managing Committee.
  2. The chair will submit the nomination(s) to the Committee on Personnel for review. The committee will then make a recommendation to the Executive Committee and (with the Executive Committee’s approval) to the Managing Committee at its next meeting.

What to expect after a nomination is submitted?

  • Once approved by the Personnel Committee, nominees will be notified that they are "pending members" and will be invited to the next Managing Committee meeting.
  • During the Managing Committee meeting, early in the meeting, the Managing Committee will vote to approve the current pending members. The pending members who are in attendance will be asked to leave the room before the vote. After the vote, a member of the Personnel Committee will welcome the pending members into the room as voting members.

*If the Cooperating Institution is part of a consortium, please default to the consortium agreement for the correct number of voting representatives from each institute. If you are unsure about the details of your consortium agreement, please email Alicia Dissinger (adissinger@ascsa.org).

Types of Managing Committee Members

Voting Member (v)
A voting member may be elected to a Standing Committee and vote on all matters when a vote is necessary.

Non-Voting  Member (*)
Non-voting membership is reserved for members who have retired while actively serving. The Regulations (II.1) state: "Representatives who retire from their institutions become non-voting members upon their retirement. A representative may also choose to become a non-voting member of the Managing Committee prior to retirement." Non-voting members receive all Managing Committee mailings, and they are welcome to attend meetings and to take part in discussions. They cannot serve on a Standing Committee or vote.

Member ex officio (^)
An ex officio member can be the elected Alumni/ae representatives. Three representatives of the Alumni Association of the School shall also be members of the Managing Committee, one to be the President of the Alumni Association (who shall be a member ex officio) and two to be elected by the Association. The three Alumni/ae representatives are voting members. Additionally, the President and Treasurer of the School are members of the Managing Committee ex officio. Members ex officio of the Managing Committee or of its separate Standing Committees are voting members of said committees unless specifically stated otherwise.

Member pro tempore by prior appointment (+)
Members pro tempore by prior appointment are members who, while on a Standing Committee as voting representatives of one institution, move to a second institution where they are not voting representatives. Individuals in this situation can remain on the Standing Committee until the end of their terms and fully participate in the Committee proceedings and votes. They do not have votes in Managing Committee meetings.

Membership Pending (#)
Pending members receive all Managing Committee mailings, but are not yet authorized to vote.

Officer of the School, non-voting member ex officio (~)
Officers of the School are non-voting, ex officio members. They can serve as non-voting representatives on various Standing Committees. For more about Officers of the School, see the Regulations (III).
