ABSTRACT:

We present here the preliminary results of four seasons of excavation (2007-2010) within the Ayia Triada Cave, located in the vicinity of Karystos in southern Euboia. We take the Early Bronze Age layers as our focus because of the human remains dating to that time period that were found in a section of the cave called the East Chamber. Following the discussion of our research aims, the geographical setting, our methods, and a critical assessment of the most important finds, a tentative interpretation of the burial contexts from the cave is offered. Finally, we provide a brief interpretation of the place of Ayia Triada, and more broadly the Karystia, in the Early Bronze Age Aegean world.
