ABSTRACT:

This study publishes all 16 of the poros limestone statuettes and small reliefs from the excavations that can be identified with some degree of certainty as sculptors' sketches, trial pieces, models, and other exercises. Dating from the 4th century B.C. through the 2nd century A.D., this heterogeneous collection includes apprentices' trial pieces for a head and a foot, studies for single figures and reliefs, archetypes for embossed metalwork, and a possible model, or paradeigma, for a public monument.
