ABSTRACT:

During the first decades of the 20th century, the very notion and practice of philanthropy changed radically in the United States. American philanthropic foundations moved from caring for those suffering from poverty to reforming society as a whole, guided by their supposed scientific understanding and analysis of social phenomena. What was the impact of this transformation on international institutions like the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ? This article focuses on the interest of American philanthropic foundations in supporting the School's work, and, in particular, on the appropriations of the Carnegie philanthropic trusts from 1904 to 1925.
