Diana Kleiner teaching Roman architecture at Yale University.

The Ï㽶ÊÓƵ is pleased to announce that Fred Kleiner has established two new fellowships in tribute to his late wife, Diana E. E. Kleiner, Dunham Professor of History of Art and Classics Emerita and former Deputy Provost for the Arts at Yale University. Kleiner has made a multi-year commitment to fund these fellowships, which will be named the Diana E. E. Kleiner Memorial Fellowships.

This gift will support two first-year Regular Members/Academic year fellows of the American School's academic program each year through 2030–2031. While both fellowships are unrestricted, one will give preference to the study of Roman Greece and the other to the study of Greek or Roman sculpture. The inaugural Diana E. E. Kleiner Memorial Fellowships will be awarded for the 2025–2026 academic year.

This remarkable gift marks the Kleiners' fifth significant contribution to the American School. Previous gifts included support for Loring Hall, with a room named in honor of Hesperia, the Diana E. E. and Fred S. Kleiner Saloni, the Diana E. E. Kleiner Fitness Room, and the Athenian Agora Courtyard Garden.

Reflecting on this generous fellowship, Mark Lawall, Chair of the Managing Committee, remarked, "The history and archaeology of Greece under Roman rule and the study of Greek and Roman sculpture have long drawn the attention of students and scholars in the American School community. Both Fred and Diana Kleiner contributed greatly to these fields, not only as scholars but as teachers, inspiring and encouraging students to tackle these topics. The Diana E. E. Kleiner Memorial Fellowships for Regular Members ensure that their inspirational support continues for future students.”

George Orfanakos, Executive Director of the American School, said of the new fellowship gift from Fred Kleiner: “This gift is yet another extraordinary act of generosity from Fred, honoring the memory of his beloved wife, Diana. It resonates at the core of the American School’s mission – our academic program. There is no more profound or fitting tribute to a woman who devoted her life to the pursuit of knowledge and the advancement of scholarship.”
