Dear friends,

We are reaching out to you because you are one of us: faculty, students, and friends whose lives have intersected with the University of Missouri and our mutual love of Greece. Many of us have enjoyed the benefits of the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ (ASCSA), whether spending time at the Blegen Library, days on a bus trip, hours in excavation trenches, or nights at Loring Hall. Others have passed through Greece as study abroad students, researchers, and tourists. But in our own ways, we’ve all waved the banner of Missouri and came there through its great archaeology and classics programs.

You may be surprised to learn just how deeply our connections into Greece extend. Since the early years of the American School, Missouri has been a co-operating institution, beginning in 1887. Our own Walter Miller led the first American-sponsored excavation of a classical site in Greece at the Theater of Thorikos in 1886. In 1891 John Pickard joined a small team tackling the ancient site of Eretria. These pioneering scholars joined the faculty of MU in 1891 and 1892, respectively, Miller as professor of Classics and Pickard to head what was for a while a one-man department of Classical Archaeology and the History of Art.

Since that time, there has been a steady flow of “Missourians” following the path to Greece and contributing to its ever-growing body of knowledge. For well over a century, through different iterations of our programs, changes of names, and departmental reconfigurations, we have continued to send students to the School and to see others come to Missouri. In the face of new challenges that are facing not only our own university but also humanities and ancient studies everywhere, we are again at a point of change. We believe that whatever the future brings to our current programs, it is important to commemorate the significant contributions the University of Missouri has made to the understanding and appreciation of Greece, both ancient and modern.

The moment is timely. As many of you know, the American School is in the midst of extensive renovations to Loring Hall. The bedrooms are available for naming in honor of outstanding scholars and institutions. We would like to create the University of Missouri Room to commemorate our historical relationship. To that end, we have begun raising funds to participate in this drive. The Missouri Room has already been reserved. It is on the second floor of Loring, with a window that looks out onto Souidias Street.

We are asking for your help. The fundraising target for a named space in the renovated center is $50,000 (USD), which is a great deal of money, but we are confident that we can meet this goal with your support. We suggest a gift of $500, but even $100 would be very much appreciated and would help us achieve our goal (donate here). Loring Hall is scheduled to reopen in June 2021. In addition to a plaque identifying our room, the School is hosting this webpage. Below, we have included a selection of photos of our past luminaries, a list of everyone we can identify with connections to Missouri and the School, and a list of donors. We would also like to add a selection of memories. Please send us (along with your donation!) a sentence or two about what the School means to you, a person who inspired you to travel, an anecdote or reflection on your time in Greece, or your participation in the University of Missouri’s archaeology or classics programs. There is a link below to make a donation and another to share memories and photos.

Missourians have spent time at 54 Souidias for more than a century. Please join us in creating a permanent record of the archaeology and classics programs at the University of Missouri and the long and fruitful association between Missouri and Greece.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Sincerely yours,

Jane Biers
